Administrative License Revocation

If you’ve been arrested for DUI in Georgia, you may be hearing about something called an “Administrative License Suspension,” or ALS. Here’s what that means for you.

After a lawful DUI arrest, the officer has the authority to take your physical driver’s license and issue you a temporary driving permit instead. This is usually a yellow form from the Georgia Department of Driver Services, often referred to as a “1205 form.” That temporary permit allows you to continue driving for a limited time.

When the officer takes your license or issues the 1205 form, it typically means they are initiating the Administrative License Suspension process. This is a civil matter handled through the Department of Driver Services, and it is completely separate from your criminal DUI case in court.

From the date of your arrest, you have 30 days to take action. During that time, you generally have two options:

  • File an ALS appeal letter to challenge the suspension, or

  • Apply for an ignition interlock limited permit.

It’s critical to understand that one of these options must be exercised within that 30-day window. If no action is taken, your license will be automatically suspended.

Because this process moves quickly and operates independently from the criminal case, it’s important to address it right away to protect your driving privileges.
