A Hands-On Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course
DUIDLA’s SFST Practitioner Course is based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration curriculum used to train law enforcement officers.
The program takes DUI defense attorneys through the different phases of DWI detection, beginning with vehicle-in-motion observations and continuing through personal contact, pre-arrest screening, and standardized field sobriety testing.
Course topics included:
- DWI detection fundamentals
- Vehicle-in-motion observations
- Personal contact and interview techniques
- Pre-arrest screening
- Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus
- Walk-and-Turn
- One-Leg Stand
- Notetaking and testimony
- The legal environment surrounding SFST evidence
- DUI defense trial techniques
Hands-On Alcohol Workshops
One of the major components of the course was its hands-on alcohol workshops.
Participants had the opportunity to administer standardized field sobriety tests to dosed subjects across a range of blood alcohol concentrations. This is the same type of practical exercise law enforcement officers complete during their certification training.
The workshops gave participating defense attorneys an opportunity to observe and administer the tests firsthand rather than studying them only through written materials or courtroom testimony.
Greg Willis has been successful at defending DUI cases (over 93.1% without a conviction)
He's the only lawyer in the State of Georgia to ever be recognized for all three of these accomplishments.
Received the Samurai Lawyer Award for having gone to jail for a total of 4 days in order to save his own client
Received the BadAss Lawyer Award for the biggest impact of all DUI lawyers in DUI defense in the country
Received the vote of Georgia Lawyers as a Superlawyer in DUI Law for 10 straight consecutive years
Proficiency Testing and Certification
The course concluded with proficiency testing and a final examination.
Attorneys who successfully completed the requirements earned an SFST Practitioner certification.
The sold-out Atlanta program brought DUI defense attorneys from around the country together for three days of classroom instruction, hands-on testing, and practical training centered on standardized field sobriety testing.
We are proud that Greg Willis of Willis Law Firm had the opportunity to serve on the faculty for this national DUIDLA training program alongside Mike Land and Michelle Behan.
